Hydrostatic Pressure

Hydrostatic pressure is a term used to describe a high or rising water table. In St. Louis, water tables can fluctuate dramatically depending on rainfall amounts, snowmelt and drought. If the water table rises high enough, water can come up through cracks in the floor or around the perimeter, at the floor and wall seam.

Trust Stratum Structural Systems to Alleviate Hydrostatic Pressure

Hydrostatic pressure can wreak havoc on your basement. It can cause your retaining walls to buckle, your foundation to shift and your walls to crack. And, of course, your basement can certainly flood during heavy rains. This water can even move through concrete foundations due to cracks or imperfections in the wall itself, a condition sometimes referred to ‘honeycombing”

As an experienced basement repair contractor, Stratum Structural Systems has helped thousands of homeowners deal with hydrostatic pressure and its consequences.

How to Repair Hydrostatic Pressure Problems

There are both external and internal solutions to hydrostatic pressure issues and we recommend what’s best for you.

An internal system will go around the interior of your foundation and prevent water from building up and entering your basement or crawl space. This drainage system collects the water and then directs it toward a sump pit where a sump pump directs the water away from the home through a discharge line. We can typically complete these repairs in as little as just a few days.

An external system, often referred to as a French Drain, works similarly to an internal system but typically no sump pit or sump pump is utilized. The external drain system is normally gravity flowed downhill to an exit point.
